What is Short-Term Capital Gain?

Short-term capital gain arises from the sale of capital assets held for a short period:

  • Shares/Equity: Held for ≤ 12 months
  • Real Estate: Held for ≤ 24 months
  • Gold/Other: Held for ≤ 36 months

Tax Rates for STCG

  • Shares (STT Paid): 15% + Cess
  • Other Assets: As per income tax slab
  • Real Estate: Taxed at normal slab rates
  • Indexation: Available for real estate

Important Notes

  • Indexation adjusts purchase cost for inflation
  • STT paid shares get lower tax rate of 15%
  • Gain is added to total income and taxed accordingly
  • Exemptions available under Section 54, 54F, etc.
